Title
Manuscript ledger and journal of David Mack Jr
Description
The ledger is primarily concerned with the business accounts of a Connecticut farmer, David Mack Jr. However, David Mack Jr also used the ledger as a diary with varying degrees of details. From January 1869, the ledger was repurposed as a diary for Deacon Alvah Eames (1792-1877) of Becket, Massachusetts. Eames' musings and 'reminiscences of an old man' include the description of a person known as "Peter the Slave". According to Eames' biography of him, Peter was kidnapped from an unknown part of African and enslaved at a young age, dying in Washington Massachusetts in 1806.
Please contact Special Collections if you have any further information about Peter.
