Description

Princess Hiruth Desta, granddaughter of Haile Selassié, a Cambridge graduate and Principal of a girl’s school attached to the palace. Princess Ruth came to a lunch arranged by members of her staff. Her school was possibly the only girls’ school in Ethiopia at the time. She was later imprisoned as a member of the imperial family after the 1974 revolution. The original slide was taken during a three-week visit to Ethiopia and Eritrea undertaken during Elliott Forsyth’s study leave in 1959, from the University of Adelaide. Elliott used the images in the collection extensively for lectures on "Ethiopia: the Land of Prester John"
