Description

One of the chief excursions from the City of Wellington, and certainly one of the most interesting in the colony, is the railway ride over the Rimutakas. Although the line can in no way compare with the wonderful engineering enterprises in the Rocky Mountains, the California canyons, and the railway at Ver Cruz, Mexico, yet the work has been very skilfully carried out, and the Fell engine working on the steep grade is well worth seeing. The principle employed is that of horizontal wheels worked by the engine. This particular view was taken about 1 1/2 miles from the Cross Creek Station, and it shows the train labouring upwards to the Summit Station. Three engines are being employed, but Frenchquently four, or even five, are required if the load is a heavy one. The gradient averages on in fifteen, though some parts are much steeper than others. When the heavy gradients occur, it is very interesting to watch the engines working under full pressure, and slowly drawing their load up the incline. So slow is the ascent that photographers who desire to snap the trains find ample time to do so en route. They alight at the lower station, take up a suitable position that commands a view of the crawling monster, and then, after taking the picture, quietly resume their seats for the rest of the journey. The total length of the line is three miles, and it takes the train three-quarters of an hour to cover it. A short distance from the Summit Station, many a pretty scene opens out on the journey. There are odd corners here and there, formed by the sharp bends and twists in the crossing and overlapping of numerous spurs and ridges, that combine harmoniously with the varied tints of the surrounding bush.
