From Alpha to Omega: the Greek Alphabet from its Beginnings: an exhibition of Material from the Rare Books Room and the Department of Classical Studies, 28 March - 30 April 1990

The exhibition was held in the Rare Books Exhibition space, Sir Louis Matheson Library, Monash University 28 March - 30 April 1990. This exhibition has been mounted by the Main Library and the Department of Classical Studies to illustrate the main stages in the development of the Greek alphabet both before and after the invention of printing in the middle of the fifteenth century. Over the past two and a half thousand years there has been little change in the shapes of what we today call upper-case letters; this form of the alphabet was, in fact, the only one in use for most of Antiquity. Lower-case letters, however, which developed subsequently, have undergone various modifications, as will be seen by comparing a medieval manuscript (e.g. item 12) with a modem text (e.g. item 59).
